BJP MP Radha Mohan Das said, ‘Passports of those who leave their parents and spend time abroad should be cancelled’

BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Radha Mohan Das Aggarwal has raised a very emotional and serious issue in the House. issued in parliament Budget During the session on 11 February, he demanded that the passports of children who leave their parents alone in India and live abroad and do not take care of them, should be cancelled. He said that “passports of those who leave their parents in pain in India and enjoy abroad” should be cancelled.

He also urged the government to make it mandatory to obtain “Certificate of Fulfilled Obligation” from parents every six months. He said that this step is necessary to ensure the safety and respect of the elderly.

Dr. Aggarwal said that about 3.5 crore Indians are living abroad. Most of these parents or in-laws live in India. He said that behind their success lies the sacrifice of their parents, penance and financial sacrifice.

He told that many parents even sold their land and property to send their children abroad. Government schemes for affordable education and health facilities also contributed. But with time, in many cases, the children’s attachment diminished and the elders became lonely.

Traumatic events and the limits of the law

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Aggarwal mentioned the recent incidents in Delhi and Indore, where parents living alone died and their children did not return from abroad. He said that about five hundred such cases come to light every year.

He described the Maintenance and Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 as a toothless law. According to him, there are provisions in it, but to get relief the elderly have to go to court themselves. This system is not proving to be effective in practice.

Dr. Aggarwal appealed to the Foreign Minister that affidavits should be taken from those going abroad. In this, it should be ensured that they will give a certain part of their income to the parents, appoint a caretaker and arrange for life insurance.

He said that children should talk to their parents on telephone at least once a week. Also, every six months, a certificate should be taken from the parents that their responsibilities are being fulfilled. If the certificate is not received, a provision should be made to cancel the passport of the person concerned and send him back to India.
