One reason for this success is that Ishant Sharma played under the leadership of two of India’s greatest captains, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Ishant played 90 out of his 103 Tests under the leadership of Dhoni (47) and Kohli (43). Out of 80, 75 ODIs, 69 and 6 respectively played under his leadership. While all his 13 T20 matches were played under the leadership of Captain Cool. While talking openly on the captaincy of both, Ishant Sharma said that one thing was common among both great captains and that was planning.
Ishant Sharma while talking about Dhoni’s captaincy said that Mahi Bhai is such a person who does things on the field. He liked to plan on the field, he was a person who did not make a plan in advance, but used to take decisions on the field. The plan was based on the status of the game, “Ishant did not believe much in the podcast. MS Dhoni did not believe much in the meetings. He had a simple fund that you would learn only when you would make mistakes.” He said, “He believed that if you make a mistake and how much time it takes to make the next mistake, this is the continuity.”
The 311 Test wicket -taking this fast emerged in a different form under the leadership of Kohli. At his peak, he built a fast bowler with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, but for him, the only difference between Kohli and Dhoni was that Kohli always had a basic plan while Dhoni did not have a basic plan. With Virat, it was not so. There was a basic plan and then we used to assess and take decisions based on how things went ahead.
It is clear that the leadership quality of both the captains may be different, but both had a wonderful man management skill, which benefited Indian cricket a lot.
