Nearly six decades later, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sara addressed the United Nations General Assembly for the first time. This was any Syrian President’s first speech in about 60 years.
President Al-Sara said on Wednesday (local time) that Syria is now returning to the international community, after the dictatorship that killed 1 million people in the last six decades and tortured millions. He said at the annual meeting of world leaders of the Mahasabha, “Syria is regaining its proper place among the countries of the world.”
Attasi gave a speech in the United Nations in 1967 before Al-Shara
Al-Shara, soon after the Arabian-ISRIL War in 1967, became the first Syrian State to speak in the United Nations after a speech by Nurereddeen Atasasi. During that war, Damascus lost control of Golan Heights, which was later subjected to by Israel in 1981.
The civil war ended with the collapse of Assad
The autocratic, repressive 50-year rule of the Assad family in Syria suddenly collapsed in December, when he was evicted from power in a fast rebellious attack led by the then President Bashar al-Shara. With the collapse of Assad, the about 14 -year -old civil war ended.
Al-Shra targeted Israel
In his speech, Al-Shara targeted Israel. He said that even after the collapse of Assad, Israel did not stop threatening against Syria. He further stated that his policies are contrary to the support of the international community and the Syrian people, which may threaten the entire region and start struggles that will not have any end.
Negotiations on security agreement between Syria-Israel continue
He also said that negotiations on the security agreement between the two countries are going on, which may make it possible to return the 1974 ceasefire agreement and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. However, while Al-Sara had hoped last week that the agreement could be done in a few days, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday indicated that no major progress is difficult soon.
