Unique Way to Store Ghee: In Sikar, special utensils were made to keep ghee safe for a long time under the unique tradition of old -fashioned. These utensils were prepared from the camel intestines and up to 140 kg of ghee could be filled in them. Elders say that the taste and quality of old ghee was better than modern ghee. This ghee was beneficial not only for food but also for medicinal use. Soil, brass and copper utensils were also used, but ghee in the camel intestinal vessel was safe and fresh for years.

Sikar. In today’s time, it is common to keep food and drink in fridge, steel or plastic cans, but it was not a facility till a few decades ago. In olden times, the people of Rajasthan used such utensils to save their food items, whose characteristics will surprise anyone today. Especially, very unique characters were made to keep desi ghee. Among them, 140 kg i.e. a whole man ghee could be filled at a time. The specialty of these characters was that the ghee kept in them was not spoiled for years, but as old as it was, its quality was considered as best.

Elderly Ramlal Sharma says that in the olden times, desi cow’s ghee was made from house to house. It was not only for food, but also in medicinal use. This was the reason that the family used to collect ghee for a long time. The special thing was that old ghee was considered even more nutritious and beneficial, so people kept it safe in large quantities.

Special characters were made from camel intestines

The most unique thing about these characters was that they were made from the intestines of camels, not ordinary soil or metal. Ramlal Sharma says that this tradition was going on since the time of kings and emperors. Camel’s intestines were cleaned from special process, then dried and shaped. After this, such characters would be prepared from them, in which ghee would have been safe for years. This practice was prevalent due to the high availability of camels in desert areas. Soil, brass and copper utensils were also used to store ghee, but the specialty of a camel -made vessel was that the ghee kept in it was not spoiled for a long time and its real fragrance and taste were intact. This was the reason that they were also considered a type of folk art at that time.

Today, when fridge, freezer and modern packing techniques are available in the market, this tradition is almost extinct. But the elders say that when they used these characters in their homes, it used to give a wonderful experience. This tradition of Rajasthan not only reflects the understanding and skill of folk life, but also tells how our ancestors kept food for a long time even without modern means.
