The name of Ahmednagar railway station in Maharashtra will now be known by this name

The name of Ahmednagar railway station in Maharashtra has been changed. In honor of Lokmata Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, it will now be known as ‘Ahilyanagar’ after her name.

Recently, the Union Home Ministry approved the decision to change the name. After this, the Maharashtra government had issued a notification to change the name of Ahmadnagar railway station to Ahilyanagar.

Station code will not change

The Central Railway said in a release, “The station known as the first Ahmednagar will now be officially known as Ahilyanagar.” Railway said, “There will be no change in the station code and the station code of Ahilyanagar will remain ANG.”

Last month, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar wrote a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, requesting that the name of the station be changed to the new name of the city. After the name of the city was named Ahilyanagar, many organizations and citizens were demanding that the name of the railway station be changed.

Revenge name of district

On 4 October 2024, the name of Ahmadnagar city was ordered to be named Ahilyanagar.

According to the information given on the official website, Mazalak Ahmed was established in 1494 AD and the city of Nizam Shah came to be known as Ahilya Nagar city in his name. Since the headquarters of Ahilya Nagar city was in the district, Ahmednagar (Ahilya Nagar) was named the district.

After the end of the Peshwa, Ahilya Nagar district was formed in 1822. At that time, the border of Ahilya Nagar district was from Wani in the present Nashik district and in Karmala to the other end of Solapur district. In 1869, due to the formation of Nashik and Solapur districts, Wani and Karmala were excluded from Ahilya Nagar district. Ahilya Nagar district of Pune Revenue Division was included in the new Revenue Department Nashik since February 1981.
