Gauhar/ Delhi: Nowadays, if you buy a pen anywhere, you will get only a plastic pen. There will be only a few places where biodegradable pens can be found. This is a pen which contains little to no plastic, which has no impact on the environment. Keeping this in view, Saurabh Mehta, a resident of Delhi, started the startup of this pen along with his wife Shivani Mehta in 2018-19. After this he also registered the company in 2021. The company is preparing to launch its biodegradable pen on June 5 this year, the same day as World Environmental Day.
solution drawn from paper pen
Saurabh told Local18 that the pen which would have been made 70 years ago, would still be lying somewhere on the earth. No one is paying attention to this and this plastic will increase the amount of non-biodegradable plastic on earth even more in the coming years. Seeing this problem, he has created a solution in the form of paper pen. This pen is made of paper instead of plastic. Barely 5 percent of the pen is useful. Actually this 5 percent part is the nib of the pen and its ink. The rest, from the refill to the body of the pen, is all plastic, which is equal to 95 percent of the pen.
What was the biggest difficulty?
Saurabh told Local18 that he did not face much difficulty while making the paper pen. But when he was making pen refills, he was facing the most difficulty. But then after about 4 years of research, he discovered a method by which plastic could be removed from refills also. He made refills from paper using a special technique. In this, vegetable oil is applied on the inner surface, due to which the ink does not come out. This vegetable oil acts as a barrier. This pen looks and works exactly like a regular pen, but the good thing is that it does not leak ink.
Rs 16 lakh funding
Saurabh also told that his startup has received a grant of about Rs 16 lakh under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme run by the Government of India. The company used this money in product development. As of now this startup is bootstrapped, but will need more help in the future. For which he will also raise funding. He wants the big players of this market to also take forward this work with him, so that he can contribute a little towards the environment and can make more biodegradable stationery items and such paper pens.
