West Bengal Elections: Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Waqf’ bet before the elections, said- I will not let anyone’s land touch – Cm Mamata Accuses BJP of Bringing Waqf Amendment Act Says Would Not Let Anyone Touch People’s Property

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a direct attack on BJP regarding the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, saying that this law has been brought by the Center and her government will not allow people’s property to be touched under any circumstances. Addressing a public meeting in Malda, Mamata called it an attempt to do politics in the name of religion and clearly said that she does not do religion-based politics.

Mamata Banerjee alleged that some ‘communal forces’ are trying to create a rift in the society in the name of religion. He said that the Waqf Amendment Act has been brought by BJP and their government not only opposed it in the Assembly and passed the resolution, but also went to the Supreme Court. Mamata assured the public that during her tenure no one can lay hands on anyone’s land or property and the state government will not promote any kind of religious conflict.

How did the controversy start?

This statement has come at a time when the state’s position regarding the Waqf law has once again come into controversy. Recently, the state government asked the District Magistrates to upload the data of Waqf properties on the UMID portal of the Centre, which has created a fresh uncomfortable situation. This step has been described by many as a practical acceptance of the law. The Center has set December 6 as the deadline to upload complete details of more than 82 thousand Waqf properties online.

resentment of minorities

State Minority Affairs Minister and Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Bengal president Siddiqullah Chaudhary said that the Muslim community will not remain silent if an attempt is made to take over the Waqf properties. He raised questions on both the central and state governments and asked who would go to the villages and tell the people that their land is no longer theirs. Chaudhary said that the community is ready for a long struggle and is looking at the situation seriously. This uneasiness within TMC has become a challenge for the party before the next assembly elections.

Making the situation more complicated, AIMIM is preparing to protest in Kolkata against this U-turn of the state government. After months of protest, the competition in minority politics has intensified with the Centre’s acceptance of the conditions. According to political analysts, while TMC calls itself a protector of minority rights, BJP calls it appeasement and AIMIM is trying to turn this discontent in its favor.

Mamta’s micro-managed message

In view of the assembly elections to be held next year, this message of Mamata Banerjee was given in minority-dominated Malda district, which is considered very important politically. Mamta said that her government has stood with all religions and no one’s property will be taken away. Amidst the central rules, political pressure and minority resentment, his statement clearly indicates that the Waqf Act has now become a major issue in the electoral politics of Bengal.
