A big and historic beginning has been made regarding mental health in Punjab. By launching the country’s first government Leadership in Mental Health programme, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made it clear that “war against drugs” is not just a slogan but a ground fight in which the safety and future of every family is at stake. This fellowship will be for 2 years. In which it is going to be a model not only for Punjab but for the whole of India.
Partnership between AIIMS Mohali and TISS Mumbai
This initiative, started in partnership with AIIMS Mohali and TISS Mumbai, will take mental health and drug prevention to a whole new level in 23 districts. The government is selecting 35 young experts who have studied psychology or social work and who have experience of working in mental health. These fellows will reach out to Punjab’s villages, cities, schools, colleges, community centers and rehab facilities to implement a model never imagined before in India, combining prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.
Remuneration Rs 60000 per month
The thinking of CM Bhagwant Mann believes that fighting drugs is not just the responsibility of the police or administration, but there is a need to strengthen the mind of the society. Due to this thinking, the fellows in this program will get the opportunity to learn special training, mentorship and grassroots leadership from TISS Mumbai. They will also get a respectable remuneration of Rs 60,000 per month, so that they can work with the youth and families of Punjab with full energy without any pressure.
This program is truly the heartbeat of Punjab. Drug addiction had spread like an epidemic, but now Punjab has decided to fight this battle with experts, through scientific methods and among the people. Bhagwant Mann has shown that when the intentions are clear and the aim is the welfare of the people, then governments bring changes, not statements.
