Trump China visit live: Rubio hoping for ‘positive response’ to appeal for release of Hong Kong activist Jimmy Lai | China

Welcome summary

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are set to meet on Friday to wrap up a high-stakes two-day state visit that has featured pomp and business deals but also a stark warning from Xi that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push US-China relations to “a very dangerous place”.

Trump is on the first visit by a US president to China since 2017 and has been hoping for tangible results that might improve his sagging approval ratings ahead of the crucial midterm elections.

The two leaders are scheduled to have tea and lunch today before Trump flies back to the US.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio told NBC in an interview broadcast on Thursday that the US was hoping for a positive response from China on Washington’s appeals for the release of jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai and others.

Lai, a prominent pro-democracy activist and critic of the Chinese Communist party, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong after being found guilty of national security and sedition offences. He later said he would not appeal against his conviction, opening the door for political negotiations to his release.

During the Beijing summit Trump has also been expected to urge China to convince Iran to make a deal with Washington to end a war unpopular with American voters. A brief US summary of Thursday’s talks highlighted what the White House called the leaders’ shared desire to reopen the strait of Hormuz and Xi’s apparent interest in buying US oil to reduce China’s dependence on Middle East supplies.

In other developments:

  • Trump told Fox News that China had agreed to order 200 Boeing jets – its first purchase of US-made commercial jets in nearly a decade. But markets were expecting a much higher number, with earlier news reports suggesting 500 or more could be involved, and Boeing shares fell more than 4% after the comments.

  • Xi’s remarks on Taiwan, the democratically governed island Beijing claims, represented a sharp warning during a pomp-filled summit that otherwise appeared friendly and relaxed. They came in a closed-door meeting that ran for more than two hours, Beijing said.

  • US secretary of state Marco Rubio told NBC News that Taiwan was discussed, saying the Chinese “always raise it … we always make clear our position and we move on to the other topics”. Rubio is among a large contingent of US officials and business leaders who travelled with Trump to China.

  • At a lavish state banquet on Wednesday, Xi called the China-US relationship the most important in the world and added: “We must make it work and never mess it up.” Trump earlier told Xi their two countries were “going to have a fantastic future together”.

  • The summit has been aimed at maintaining a fragile trade truce struck when the leaders last met in October and Trump suspended triple-digit tariffs on Chinese goods and Xi backed away from choking global supplies of vital rare earths.

All-around Onslaught Of Inflation Soaring Prices Of Petrol, Diesel, And Cooking Gas Wreak Havoc On Budgets

0

The genie of inflation has once again come out in the country, due to which it is certain that the back of the common man will be broken. Due to the ongoing tension in West Asia, the rise in crude oil prices in the international market has created a big crisis for the Indian economy. Due to the continuously weakening rupee and rising fuel prices, wholesale inflation has now reached its highest level in 42 months. This unexpected rise in the prices of LPG, electricity and petrol and diesel has indicated major economic shocks in the coming days.

How huge has the prices of fuel and petroleum increased?
According to the recent data released by the Commerce Ministry, the inflation rate of fuel and electricity has jumped to 24.71 percent in the month of April. This is the highest level in the last three and a half years. Talking about crude petroleum, its inflation rate has reached 88.06 percent, which is the highest in four and a half years. The most shocking jump has been seen in the prices of petrol and diesel. The inflation rate of petrol has directly increased from 2.50 percent in March to 32.40 percent, while the rate of diesel has also increased from 3.26 percent to 25.19 percent. LPG has also become costlier compared to March.

Is there going to be a big increase in the prices of petrol and diesel?
Despite global crude oil prices increasing by up to 50 per cent, the government has currently kept the prices of petrol and domestic cooking gas stable. The government was trying to save the public from this burden, but considering the huge losses being incurred by the petroleum companies, it does not seem possible for this relief to last for long. To compensate for the increasing losses of companies, the government may soon increase the prices of petrol and diesel. Apart from this, controlling inflation amid the effect of El Nino and fluctuations in grain prices has now become the biggest challenge for the Modi government.

What impact has this inflation had on the common man’s plate?
In this era of inflation, relief has been seen only on the vegetable front. According to the data, the inflation rate of potatoes, onions and other vegetables has declined. There has been a decline of about 26 percent in onion prices and 30 percent decline in potato prices on annual basis. The prices of pulses have also remained under control. However, an increase has been recorded in the prices of milk, fruits, eggs and meat-fish. Apart from food items, the inflation rate of chemicals and manufactured products (goods made in factories) has also increased, which means that other everyday items may also become expensive in the coming time.

What impact will this have on RBI and your bank loan?
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had estimated the average inflation for the entire year at 4.6 percent, but with wholesale inflation reaching 8.3 percent, RBI’s calculations have gone wrong. When companies’ costs (wholesale prices) increase, they pass the burden on to common customers. Experts believe that if inflation continues to rise like this, then RBI will have to increase the interest rates (repo rate). Currently the repo rate is 5.25 percent. If it increases, your home loan and personal loan installments (EMIs) will become costlier, causing a double blow to the middle class.

Ballerini made headlines earlier this year when news broke that she and Chase Stokes had broken up after first getting together in January 2023. After nearly three years together, they briefly called it quits in September 2025, before getting back together and breaking up a second time in February.

“Kelsea and Chase have broken up again. It happened just the other day,” a source told Us Weekly after their second breakup.

Another source told People at the time that “their lives are in very different places right now” and merging them has been difficult, later adding, “Kelsea’s been so supportive of him throughout their relationship, but it hasn’t been reciprocated.”

Following their breakup, Ballerini fueled cheating rumors when she commented on an Instagram video shared by fellow country singer Ashley Cooke, which featured an unreleased song about a man with “wandering eyes.”

Daniel and Henrik Sedin are now co-presidents of the Vancouver Canucks after team cleans house

Sometimes I think we forget how wild it was that in the 1999 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks were able to draft identical twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin with the second and third picks. They both went on to play 17 seasons, all of them in Vancouver.

Now, they’re officially co-presidents of the Canucks

…And I’m kind of starting to wonder if they’re capable of doing anything independently.

Henrik and Daniel Sedin

The Swedish brothers hung up their skates in 2018, and the two Hall of Famers started working in the Canucks front office in the year that followed.

Now, the team is getting a fresh front office after the firing of GM Patrik Allvin and former president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford stepping down after the upcoming draft.

“For the past 26 years, Daniel and Henrik have dedicated their entire professional hockey careers to Vancouver,” team owner Francesco Aquilini said, per NHL.com. “Whether it’s as players or in various management positions, they’ve always committed themselves to excellence.”

Meanwhile, the team has also promoted Assistant General Manager Ryan Johnson to general manager.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS DEFY SLIM ODDS TO WIN THE NO. 1 OVERALL PICK IN THE 2026 NHL DRAFT LOTTERY

This new Canucks brain trust has its work cut out for it.

While it looked like things were on the upswing during the 2024 playoffs, the team collapsed the following two seasons, and even traded franchise centerpiece Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild.

The first big point of business comes in June at the NHL Draft. The Canucks have the third-overall pick behind the Toronto Maple Leafs at No. 1 and the San Jose Sharks at No. 2.

That’s a golden opportunity to inject some talent, maybe even on the blueline after that Hughes trade.

While Gavin McKenna is the presumptive No. 1 pick, there are a lot of highly rated defensemen like Chase Reid, Carson Carels and Alberts Smits that could fit the bill.

LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry slams former coach Brian Kelly while praising Lane Kiffin

While LSU coach Lane Kiffin has been the target of many fans’ and media members’ ire over the past few days thanks to his Vanity Fair interview, one man has been squarely in his corner.

Unsurprisingly, Tigers athletic director Verge Ausberry had his new head coach’s back while trashing former coach Brian Kelly and his inability to relate to boosters or fans during his time in Baton Rouge.

In an interview with USA Today, Ausberry went scorched earth, saying the program needed a complete change of direction after parting ways with Kelly.

“It’s going back to the Saban model,” Ausberry told USA Today’s Matt Hayes. “(That means) running the whole program. Then, you have to go do some things with alumni and do things with boosters and do things with fundraising, with NIL. You have to be a part of that.”

WOULD YOU WANT YOUR COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACH POSING FOR VANITY FAIR?

Though he never mentions Brian Kelly by name, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who he’s referring to during his diatribe.

“That’s what Lane will do,” Ausberry continued. “He’ll go out there and have that conversation with the donors and the people who support the program and (say), ‘We need your help,’ and give them his cell number.”

“He’s not one who’ll say, ‘OK, I don’t want people to contact me. I don’t want people to touch me. I don’t want people to be around me.’ That’s who we had. That’s why we got what we got. There was no feel, there was no connection between the LSU football program, the coach, and the fans.”

BRIAN KELLY FACES HARSH CRITICISM FROM LSU FOOTBALL STAFFERS AFTER DISMISSAL

Pretty scathing stuff from Ausberry, but not entirely baseless based on what has come out of the program as well as the tangible results during Kelly’s tenure.

LSU remains one of the easiest programs in the country to recruit talent to, given its bevy of resources and diehard boosters, yet Kelly’s recruiting classes never matched those of his direct predecessor, Ed Orgeron.

According to the 247Sports recruiting composite rankings, Orgeron’s average class ranking as head coach at LSU was 6.8. Kelly’s, by comparison, was 8.75, with his classes getting progressively worse every year aside from his very first class (often referred to as a transition class, which is usually put together in the span of a few weeks).

WHICH TEAMS HAVE THE MOST VALUABLE COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROSTERS HEADING INTO 2026 SEASON?

If Kelly really was that standoffish with boosters and donors — and I have no reason to believe he wasn’t, given his reputation as a prickly guy — then it makes sense that the program wasn’t able to recruit to the standards it had become accustomed to.

College football, especially high-level, SEC football, is a money-driven league, and donors aren’t going to be as eager to open up their checkbooks for a coach they don’t like or can’t relate to.

Kelly isn’t exactly known as an ace recruiter either, so he likely needed those donors to step up even more so than previous LSU coaches to help him close on the trail.

Now, as far as the Lane Kiffin side of this story, that remains to be seen.

It’s early, and the honeymoon phase is still in effect in southern Louisiana for both coach and program, but Kiffin will have to show results quickly.

To his credit, Kiffin is the main reason the NIL apparatus at Ole Miss reached the point it did, and the early returns for LSU’s roster, valued at roughly $40 million, seem to suggest Ausberry is on to something.

But, the sentiment on social media, particularly from Rebels fans, paints a different, less rosy picture.

That could be sour grapes, or it could be a genuine warning. Only time will tell.

During a time when Lane Kiffin once again became the target of fans everywhere, his new AD stepped up and circled the wagons.

Something tells me that won’t be the last time he has to do that, so it’s good he’s getting his reps in early.

US justice department accuses Yale medical school of illegally using race in admissions | Yale University

0

The justice department on Thursday accused Yale University of illegally considering race in admissions to its medical school – the second institution to face discrimination allegations by the federal agency this month.

In a letter to a lawyer for Yale, Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, said a justice department investigation found that Black and Hispanic students have a much higher chance of admission to the medical school than white or Asian students, despite having lower grade-point averages and lower test scores.

“Yale has continued its race-based admissions program despite the supreme court and the public’s clear mandate for reform,” Dhillon said in a statement. “This department will continue to shed light on these illegal practices, and demand that institutions of higher education comply with federal law.”

Yale officials and the attorney named in the justice department letter, Peter Spivack, did not immediately return email messages seeking comment.

Since Donald Trump returned to office last year, his administration has been putting pressure on universities to stop using race as a basis for admission, which conservatives view as illegal discrimination. And a US supreme court decision in 2023 banned the use of affirmative action in college admissions, in cases involving Harvard and the University of North Carolina.

Last week, the justice department notified the University of California, Los Angeles that its medical school illegally considered race in admissions.

In the letter to Yale, Dhillon alleged the New Haven, Connecticut, school was violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibiting discrimination and said the justice department is seeking to enter into a voluntary resolution agreement with the university. She also noted in the letter that the agency has the authority to take the school to court to enforce Title VI if it cannot obtain compliance through voluntary means.

The justice department cited differences in grade-point averages and standardized test scores as evidence of racial preferences in the incoming classes of 2023, 2024 and 2025. In Yale’s most recent class, Black students had a median GPA of 3.88 and a median MCAT score in the 95th percentile, compared with Asian students, who had a median GPA of 3.98, and white students, with a 3.97 median GPA. Both Asian and white students of that class had median MCAT scores in the 100th percentile.

“Based on our preliminary review of the applicant-level data, Yale’s use of race resulted in a Black applicant [having] as much as 29 times higher odds of getting an interview for admission than an equally strong Asian applicant with similar academic credentials,” Dhillon’s letter said.

The justice department also described Yale’s use of a holistic admissions process as a means for the school to consider race.

The letter also cited Yale’s amicus brief in the Students for Fair Admissions lawsuit that led to the 2023 supreme court ruling on affirmative action, in which the school said it would not be able to maintain diverse classes without explicit consideration of race. The department said the fact that Yale was able to maintain similarly diverse classes despite that brief as evidence that the school had engaged in race discrimination.

Dhillon wrote that the lack of any change in Yale’s admissions outcomes after the supreme court ruling showed “a willful failure to comply with that decision”.

In March, a coalition of 17 Democratic state attorneys general filed a lawsuit challenging a Trump administration policy that requires higher education institutions to collect data showing they aren’t considering race in admissions.

Afterward, Knight expressed his support in Bailey’s own pursuit of some gold. Bailey made it clear he was going after the AEW World Championship next. Darby Allin, the current title holder, defended it against Konosuke Takeshita as he gears up for a hair vs. title match against Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF).

In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Knight gushed about his tag team partner.

“Man, ‘Speedball’ Mike Bailey is a savant – a wrestling savant. He’s been wrestling for almost longer than I’ve been alive,” Knight said. “He’s been in every single situation that you can think of. He’s wrestled thousands of times. He watches wrestling all the time. He talks about wrestling all the time. He knows how to put everybody in the right place to get the best reaction from the crowd.

“So, the fact that I got somebody like that on my side … and he kicks extremely hard. So, I think he’s extremely smart and I don’t have to feel those kicks, it’s a great combination for me. So, it’s no complaints from me.”

Knight shared some of the wisdom that Bailey has imparted on him through the years.

“The No. 1 thing is don’t over think it. Don’t over think it and do what you do,” Knight said. “Like, as simple as that sounds, that’s literally the advice that he gives you. And you just take that and go, ‘OK, don’t over think it and just do what you do.’ And you just go out there and do what you do and you come to the back and everybody’s happy and you just get ready for the next one.”

Both men have crushed it since joining AEW.
